The letter from Fanny Kallir, dated 1942, concerns the cast of the bust of Gustav Mahler by Auguste Rodin which had been owned by Alma Mahler's stepfather, Carl Moll; Moll had apparently traded the bust to Otto Kallir at some point, and the Kallirs were now negotiating with Alma a fair price at which she could buy the bust back from them. (This bust was apparently the one that Alma later gave to the Vienna State Opera in 1948; it was a different cast of the bust that Alma had originally given to the opera house in 1931 and that was damaged in the war.) 2 letters from Otto Kallir reflect, among other things, the fact that he was supportive of Alma in her legal battle to obtain restitution of property she had left behind in Austria, in the care of her half-sister Maria Eberstaller and her stepfather, when she and Franz Werfel were forced to flee Austria in 1938.
